Volunteering Experiences
SHINE
Through the Compassionate Youths in Action (CYA) CCA in Ngee Ann Poly I volunteered for SHINE's Reading Odyssey programme where I had the opportunity to share the joy of reading with children. This opportunity then led me to again volunteer for SHINE's Zoo Outing.

I was tasked with teaching children how to read and to improve their basic pronunciation and understanding of English. I was partnered with one child to read with him over the course of a few months.
By the end of the session, we were able to progress from simple books to more difficult books based on SHINE's rating of difficulty. I am also confident to say that I was able to teach him a few new English words for him to use.

Reading Odyssey is an 8 week program during the semester break aimed to help kids to read better, helping them with their pronunciation and enunciation. This experience really tested and helped me to improve my perseverance as these kids are new to many words in the English language and require repeating to be able to properly read and say certain words.

Following the end of the 8 weeks of Reading Odyssey, I then volunteered again with SHINE to help bring the kids to the zoo. The experience was fun and rewarding as I was able to interact with many of the kids and to see the smiles on their faces when they saw the different animals.

Life Student Care
Through a module in Social Services, we were tasked with reaching out to an organization and then planning and executing an event for them. After numerous attempts at finding an organization willing to work with us, Life Student Care reached back to us and offered us an opportunity to volunteer for them.
We were requested to plan a session to teach the students there on controlling their emotions which we did. This opportunity of needing to collaborate with stakeholders and working with them was a valuable experience. I learned through this the difficulty of seeking out clients and matching our interest with theirs.

Migrant Worker Center
Through the same module as Life Student Care, I volunteered with another group's project of working with Migrant Workers.

This experience was an insightful one as I had the rare opportunity to have a proper conversation with a few migrant workers where I learned about their living conditions, family life, and how difficult it is for some of them to reach back to their family. We were tasked with curating meaningful activities for them.

Through this opportunity, I we were able to help about 20 migrant workers at the center have a better day and to send a letter for them back home.

Willing Hearts
As ambassadors of the school of humanities and social science, we wanted our ambassadors to be more engaged in volunteering and giving back to the community, especially during COVID times where help is needed by many.

As part of the Liaison Committee of my CCA, I organized and recruited over 15 members of my CCA to volunteer at Willing Hearts.
We were able to contribute to the creation of an entire afternoon worth of meals.
