Student Council President

One of my most life-changing experience which inspired me to become the person I am today.

Example of work done:

SC Camp Proposal

SC Visioning Workshop Slides

Sec 1 Orientation Proposal

At secondary 3, I was blessed with the opportunity to be selected as Student Council President. This experience not only exposed me to different forms and leadership and unique opportunities, but it also served as a platform for me to learn many life-long skills.

Right from the start I was thrown into planning for various school events such secondary 1 orientation, teacher's day, among many others. I was confused on stressed out by the amount of work and the need to make the events successful. Since it was my first time working in a big team, I rallied my fellow EXCOs to delegate the heavy workload among us. We set deadlines and delegated work to other Council members beyond our EXCOs to help out and contribute their skills. Jumping to the end, we were able to successfully carry out all our events that we were required to do. Satisfying the targets of our events such as teachers and students.

The experience taught me the importance of work delegation and communication among everyone. Not only that, the delegation of work, was important in making everyone feel the same sense of responsibility towards the event so that they would feel empowered and motivated to contribute.

Other than in school events, I also had the opportunity to take part in external school events. One memorable event was the Brunei-Singapore Adventure Camp. Here I met student leaders from both Brunei and Singapore. Here I was exposed to the different leadership styles of different leaders along with the conflicting views of who should be the leader and how they should lead. To solve this issue, we discussed and proposed to select a leader for each day of the 5 day camp, which greatly helped improve teamwork. This teamwork eventually led us to being one of the top 3 teams for in terms of scores during the camp.

This experience taught me the importance of giving others opportunity and that being a leader doesn't require any titles or positions, and that it's your actions that matters, even though I am not the leader for the day, it does not mean that I cannot step up when needed.

The most important lesson I've learned from these experiences is the importance of passion.

Passion for my work pushed me through hardships and taught me the importance of continual learning. My experience was not a smooth-sailing one, with many failures. I wanted to give up many times due to the stress, however, I pushed on and continued learning and working hard. I taught myself to see the opportunities in every failure and as a chance to improve and learn.

Because of this experience, I no longer fear failure, sure I will try to avoid failure, however, if I do fail, I know to embrace and learn from it.

I would like to share a simple phrase I shared with my fellow leaders and students to live by:

We try. We fail. We learn. And we repeat.
